Red Dragon

The Red Dragon is a pretty good Asian, Thai, Vietnamese restaurant which only offers delivery service. We tried it out several days ago and were really surprised how fresh and well prepared the meals were. We ordered an appetiser of 8 handmade spring-rolls filled with vegetables, a big Vietnamese soup and fried egg rice with crispy duck. Every single item was delicious and make from fresh ingredients. The price was so inexpensive, we paid only 13€ and it only took 20 minutes from the ordering to the delivering of our meal! If you are hungry and you don’t fell like cooking or going into a restaurant then the Red Dragon is a quick and cheap alternative.

Istoria

Istoria is an Italian-Mediterranean restaurant which is known locally for its great stone-oven pizzas. The pizza crust is thin and amazingly crispy! Plus, the toppings are always fresh! I highly recommend my favourite pizza called , on the menu, the Lucculus. It comes with fresh tomatoes, rocket-salad, spicy salami and parmesan. Be sure not to overlook the rest of the menu, as the selection of steaks, pasta, salads and desserts, is equally as good as that of the pizzas. The restaurant is located at Kollwitzplatz, across from a busy playground. So, a tip to those wishing to have a quite meal: you should request a table inside.

Curry 36

One of the best ‘imbiss’, or snack bars, in Berlin is “Curry 36”. It is really famous in Berlin for its ‘curry-wurst’ with french fries and its self-made curry ketchup, which is made with secret ingredients. If you are lucky, you need only to wait 15 minutes to get served! It is not uncommon to see a line of customers waiting in the early morning for service. Yes, Curry 36 is that famous in Berlin! I recommend it, if you feel like having something typical Berlin and you have a little free time on your hand.

Never-Never-Land

If you are looking for an unusually restaurant, than I recommend the Australian restaurant Never-Never-Land. The items on the menu range from ostrich, crocodile, kangaroo to locust. A veritable smorgasbord of exotic and unusual delicacies from Australia. I highly recommend the mixed plate “Canberra” which is great for two people. The menu comes with deer, kangaroo, ostrich, crocodile, lamb, salad and potato wedges. This menu gives you the possibility to taste the complete meat range that the restaurant offers. If you do not wish to have so much meat, then try the burger menus which come with beetroot, a typical Australian accompaniment for burgers.

For those of you, who wish to try something completely out of the way, try the locusts. You can have them as an appetizer with salad or even as a desert, served with chocolate and caramel.

Rosa Caleta

This time, I will write about a special restaurant called “Rosa Caleta”. It is a Jamaican restaurant and what makes this restaurant special is the fact that its space also doubles as an art gallery. Dinners have the possibility to dine on authentic Jamaican cuisine, prepared by a Jamaican chef, and also enjoy the artwork of local artists. The artwork spans the range from eclectic avant-garde to subtle sexuality and it enhances the restaurant’s dinning ambiance.

The food is really delicious and it transports your taste buds to the tropical island in the Caribbean. However when the bill arrives, dinners will be instantly brought back to Berlin. The restaurant is not inexpensive, according to Berlin standards, and the main reason for this seems to be the fact that all the food products must be shipped in from places, such as London, where there is a large Jamaican diaspora. Despite the price, if you would like to try something exotic and new, then this restaurant is well worth a visit.

The Marienburger

The Marienburger is, as the name already implies, a burger restaurant. It is around the corner from where I’m living and because of this it is has almost become my second kitchen. The burgers are quite good and customers can even order a burger with 360g meat! it’s fantastic! For those who prefer to have bio food, they can order bio meat; and an option is also available for vegetarians as The Marienburger has halumie-burger and a veggie-burger.

Be forewarned that The Marienburger is more ‘a take away’ place than a ’sit in’ restaurant. Inside there are wall tables and stools however peak hours they are always taken. During the summer there are tables and chairs outside; but they are not practical to sit on because of the sloping pavement.

The Marienburger is affordable and you should try the “Lambada burger”(a lamb steak burger with coconut curry sauce). It is delicious especially with potato wedges.

Minh Quang

Today I want to review a Thai-Vietnamese restaurant called “Minh Quang”. My expectations were low because from the outside the restaurant looked like an ordinary Asian diner; however appearance would ultimately prove to be deceptive. My table was next to an incredibly tacky and unremarkable aquarium and as I examined the menu, I took great pains not stare at the aquarium. My expectations started to change when the waitress arrived. She was really nice, pretty and she had a good command of English. My dinner companion and I ordered an appetizer and a main course and this was definitely too much (we took half of the main course home with us). It was so delicious, the ingredients were fresh and it was seasoned just right. The restaurant is a hidden treasure because of the price and the quality of the food. It is not surprising that it was listed in the top ten of the Tip-Edition “Die Speisekart”. The “Ming Quang” is an absolute must for people who love Thai-Vietnamese cuisine.

The Bird

The first restaurant that I will present for my blog is called “The Bird”. It is, in my opinion, one of the best burger restaurant in Berlin. The atmosphere reminds one of being in a New York style restaurant. The staff is cool, young, tattooed and English speaking.
The portions are huge and the french-fries are amazing. You can order burgers, of course, but you can get also steaks, salads and sandwiches there as well. If you go to The Bird for the first time you should definitely order the burger called “Da Birdhouse”. It comes with two fried patties, American cheese, bacon, fried onions, ketchup, mustard and pickles. It is one of the best burgers I ever eaten and at 11€ it is also one of the most expensive burgers I ever had too. But your selection choice is not limited to what is available on the menu because you can create whatever kind of burger you would like to have. You can have a blue cheese burger, a guacamole burger or even a burger with fried eggs.
Diners can choose how they would like to have their meat: raw, medium or well done. However be forewarned that the chef frowns upon the selection of “well done”. In addition to the burgers, there is a beer called “La Chouffe” and it is incredible. The taste is deceitfully soft because it contains 9% alcohol and so it comes with a kick. It is delicious never-the-less!!! For anyone looking for great burgers in a restaurant with an amazing atmosphere, I highly recommend The Bird. However for a burger restaurant it is quite expensive but it is worth it.
